Photo 3: jacket I’m replicating. I haven’t been able to find a lot about the original. I think the original is in the Den Haag and I’ve found photos of a replica, but I’m not sure which photos are the original jacket and which ones are the replica. Don’t suppose anyone knows more???

So status for the Chevalier Ball is that I am very naked currently. 🤣🤣🤣

Marcus and I decided to go with a military inspire

Marcus and I decided to go with a military inspired pirate style. I made all our jackets and then purchased pants and shirts for the rest.

My boots are my imperial officer boots. I made a fold over piece that I could tuck into the boots, so win for modifying existing boots to look like pirate boots!

Thanks to @elizabeth_hardin_ for the lessons on hair braiding. I really tried and I practiced for weeks, but me and waterfall braids are not on talking terms. 🤣 I finally gave up on those 2 days before the event and went with a backup plan. I do like how the hair turned out in the end tho!

TBH they would make awful pirates cause they inherited their mom’s extreme motion sickness. 😅They loved Pirates of the Caribbean tho (which we showed them right before we drove to San Diego), and they had blast at @aimeekittycosplay’s pirate party.

I’m actually not huge into pirates but when one

I’m actually not huge into pirates but when one of your besties decides she is going to rent a historical ship and have a pirate party, you start sewing. 👻 I crammed out jackets for the entire fam and I even managed to finish them an entire day before the trip which is a minor miracle.

We drove down to San Diego and got on the HMS Surprise at the San Diego Maritime Museum and had a great time! I did have to get off the boat with the girls a bunch cause we were all getting a little seasick. 😅 More photos of the family later, but here are some quick phone photos and a video.

Highlight of my week was getting invited by the @asianartmuseum and @freshfrippery to see the Phoenix Kingdoms exhibit. We got to wear hanfu to the museum to see this amazing exhibit.

Y’all. They had garments that were over 2000 years old. 😱 How crazy is it that they survived?!

It was an absolute honor to get a personal tour of the exhibit from Chief Curator Dr Mintz. Anyone who knows me knows that I’m not a huge fan of museums (unless there is clothing involved) but I had such an amazing time hearing about all the bronzes and other items on display. It’s stunning how well preserved the items are and the craftsmanship level is phenomenal.

And we spent a lot of time geeking out over the garments. To no one’s surprise. 😁

The other highlight was seeing a guzhin, a Chinese harp like instrument. It was so cool to see how much it looks like the version we use today. It hasn’t changed that much in 2000 years.

If you’re interested in Chinese art or history, definitely go see this and go soon because it will be gone after July!
