Totoro is one of my favorite Miyazaki films and I’d always planned to make Totoro costumes for The Brood. When Cation Designs announced the “Small Human Being Sew-Along”, I decided this was the perfect time to make them. Lorelai joined in, making a costume for her tadpole so we had a complete set.
(Did you know the blue and white ones actually have names? Chu Totoro and Chibi Totoro. Who knew?)
As I mentioned in my last Halloween costume post, I decided that we needed to do something as a family and this year’s costume set would be from Avatar: The Last Airbender.
Marcus has a Zuko costume and I have a Mai costume. The Larva got Toph’s dress from The Blind Bandit episode, and the Grub got an airbender costume.
I love Halloween because it means I can dress up my brood. This year’s theme was supposed to be Final Fantasy with the Grub as a moogle and the Larva as a white mage. I got as far as making the moogle costume, but then I decided that we needed to do a theme as an entire family.
The problem with that decision is that I no longer have a Final Fantasy costume and making new adult costumes is a lot more work than making kid costumes. Marcus and I do, however, both have Avatar: The Last Airbender costumes, so now I’m in middle of making new Avatar costumes for the kids.
In the meantime, I decided to snap some photos of the Grub in her moogle costume.
The Larva’s latest costume for Big Wow Comicfest and Fanime was baby Anna from Frozen. Aimee designed all the Frozen fabrics for her Spoonflower shop so I was able to get all my fabrics there. I used a Kona cotton for the top and silky faille for the skirt. I really like Spoonflower’s silky faille fabric. It’s soft and flowy and didn’t wrinkle at all despite the Larva being in and out of the carseat and the stroller in her costume.
About a month ago, I made a new costume for the larva for a photoshoot with Ed Pingol. We were wearing the fairies and obviously, she needed a costume too. =D
